After a day of stormy wet weather the clouds broken about an hour before sunset and I noticed a rainbow. I had a hunch that the direction of the sun was around 40 degrees off the line of sight from this location, so I rushed there just in time and it was perfectly aligned with Holgate Windmill and York Minster. A truly special moment.

A favourite tree of mine standing strong in the midst of a snow storm
A cold morning a few minutes after the sun had risen and started to warm the ground ever so slightly creating a freezing mist.
Through a gap in the canopy of the surrounding trees, the light was accentuating the hoar frost on this little sapling on a very cold winter morning

Langdale Pikes with a little dusting of winter from Fell Foot at the start of Wrynose Pass.

The view up wast water towards Great Gable
I passed through a stretch of denser wood and was looking for a splash of colour that was down at eye level. I noticed this sapling quite delicately growing in a small clearing allowing a little bit of light down through the canopy to warm it up and make it stand out against the foggy cool tones in the background.
A gnarled and twisted oak amongst the trees
One of the most iconic waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales with glorious autumnal colours
One of the great waterfalls of the Yorkshire Dales with autumnal colours
Sunbeams breaking over the ridges on the flanks of Wetherlam and Old Man of Coniston whilst heading up Tom Heights. This was the last of the light that day, but it was great to see.
I've often admired these ferns and plants clinging to life on a ledge here or there, and on this occasion, the light illuminated them perfectly in contrast to the darkness around and the greyness of the slate shelf upon which they clung.
Autumnal colours through with the window in Cathedral Cave
As the rain poured down heavily a shaft of light broke through briefly and lit up the trees and the little row of houses.

The silver birches are so beautiful at this time of the year as the golden touch of autumn spreads out across their limbs.
As we descended the ridge of Lingmoor Fell, the last beams of sunset broke through and kissed the very tops of the Langdale Pikes.
Drone panoramic from over Lingmoor Fell with Side Pike and the Langdale Pikes behind.
After a lacklustre sunrise up on Loughrigg, the sun started to finally breakthrough small gaps in the clouds and tracked across the hillside picking up interesting details. In one of those moments, the light hit a lone tree with softer light accentuating the surrounding woodland.
Beautiful moody sky just after sun set looking out from Holme Fell across the numerous quarry workings towards Mickleden flanked by the familar sights of the Wrynose Fells, Pike of Blisco, Bowfell, the Langdale Pikes and Lingmoor Fell

Moody sunset at Saltwick Bay near Whitby, with the wreck of Admiral Van Tromp in the foreground, Black Nab in the middle ground on the right and in the distant, in the glow of the setting sun, Saltwick Nab.
Panoramic looking towards Hood Hill with Garbutt Wood, Goremire Lake and Whitestone Cliff drenched in the evening golden light
The Yorkshire Wolds are not a National Park nor even an Area of Outstanding National Beauty, but the V-cut valleys and S bends are beautiful all times of the year, and Frendal Dale is no exception

2020 started with a lot of floods, nearly 3 weeks of high water level that affected homes and business. But floods are part of York's history, part of why York is where it is and a reminder that nature is everyones master.

This image is taken from Ouse Bridge on the Queens Staith side looking over to the famous Kings Arms in which a plaque can be found that shows the levels of floods.

This was the briefest of light that I saw stood on the dam at Megget Reservoir.

A freezing cold misty winters morning at Strensall Common, this stand of Silver Birch stood to attention as the sky erupted with beautiful lilacs and purples.
Castle Howard Mausoleum in soft winter side light
Panoramic shot of the Buttermere Pines with cloud rolling down the side of Fleetwith Pike and Warnscale. I was drawn to this common scene by the way the clouds hugged and flowed over the flank of Fleetwith Pike.
After an early walk up to the summit with no chance of a sunrise, I decided to head back for breakfast. I suddenly felt the warmth of the sun on my neck as the sun broke through a gap in the clouds and spun around and fumbled with my phone to capture the view before me. Golden side light illuminated Cat Bells, accentuating the contours of her flanks in full autumnal plumage. By the time I got the big cam out the light was gone.

Autumnal early morning light catches the clouds over the Helvellyn range at Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District. The central cloud has the look of a phoenix alight in the fire colours of the morning sky.
Autumnal dawn light explodes in the sky in a blanket of fire over the Helvellyn range at Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District. Its easy to wonder what Neolithic man must have thought at the sight of such wonders.

A beautiful cascade on the Cotterdale Beck
Probably the most impressive of the Keld waterfalls, Kisdon force is two cascades hat drop around 10m in total.
The area around Keld has a number of waterfalls, and East Gill Force is very iconic.
Taken from YHA Ambleside at Lakehead, after a glorious summers day, clouds rolled in and mist started to form on the fells accentuating the layers of trees, ridges and clouds.
Early morning in August capturing the cascade out of the main plunge pool with the main waterfall behind.
Early morning in August as the sun comes round behind the waterfall, the sunlight punched through the undergrowth to illuminate the shallow gorge that starts at Janets Foss and runs down to Malham.
Malham Lone Tree just before sunrise. Despite the cloud on the horizon blocking the majority of the direct sunlight, I loved the colour of the sky and subtle blues and magenta light that accentuates the limestone pavement around it.

Hushinish is a remote place along a long road along the coast line of North Harris. On this occasion, as in many, the waves were whipped up by the strong winds and throwing themselves onto the rocks. Beautiful iconic colours of dark rocks, golden sand and sea greens.
